“Choose a name”

This one is tough. Back in the mid 90’s this was quite easy to do. Nowadays, the good ones are taken! Not really. A lot of the names are available now. Those who purchased them, have let them expire. You will need some patience and a few hours of time. Our suggestion is go to whoissoft and search for multiple domain names for their availability. By no means do we suggest that you purchase your name there. Simply look and search. You are better off purchasing a domain name with the web hosting company you have chosen.

Some thoughts on purchasing a domain name.

1. Make sure it is a name that interacts with what your site is about.
2. Try your best to get a short name. Remember, your domain name is part of your email address. Your visitors/customers will like it better by typing in a shorter email address.
3. Manage it. Don’t let it expire by accident. You would be surprised at how many people let this happen and lose a name that too a long time to acquire.
Good luck with the hunt!

“Pick a good one”

Choosing a web hosting company can be a nightmare. First off, there are thousands to choose from. Anyone seeking a host is sure to find this to be true. Lets start with the basics. Look for a host that has everything you need. Make sure they sell domain names, offer e-commerce options and have a good support staff. Make sure the host doesn’t charge extra for these options. Domain names should be price under $20 for the typical extension.
Often times a webmaster finds that the hosting provider they choose is lacking in certain areas. It is good to create a check list to begin your search. Once you have a list of hosts that meet your current and future needs, it is time to test them out.

Testing a host is fun. I always review the web site first and look for contact information on each page. If i find the information is hard to find, I move on. If i find that they have made an effort to list this information, they go on my short list. The most important quality about a host is service. You’ll be surprised at how many don’t offer it. Now, still at the site, log into the technical support information and read. Make sure there are good explanations and images if at all possible. Finally, call them. I would suggest calling them at 2am. See if they answer the phone. See if you actually speak with a support rep. I have found a lot of companies offer 24/7 phone support, but what really happens is an answering service takes a message. Your issue doesn’t actually get reviewed until the next business day. I hope this editorial helps in your search. There are great hosting providers out there. You simply have to find them. Good luck.
